Goat Whey Protein vs Cow Whey Protein

Goat Whey Protein vs Cow Whey Protein

If you are a die-hard cow whey consumer, you may have never considered goat whey. Most people don't consider goat whey unless they are experiencing digestive issues with cow whey.

For as many benefits as goat whey has, it's surprising how many people either don't know it exists or dismiss it based on preconceived ideas around it (ie - taste).

While goat whey and cow whey share many similarities, goat whey breaks away from cow whey in nutrient composition, digestibility, and its allergenic profile.

1. Digestibility:

  • Goat whey is an A2 milk and is easier to digest for many people. The proteins in goat milk, including whey, tend to form smaller and softer curds in the stomach, which may allow for quicker digestion and less stomach discomfort.
  • Cow whey is an A1 milk and can be harder to digest for some individuals, particularly those who are lactose intolerant or sensitive to cow’s milk proteins.

2. Lactose Content:

  • Goat whey usually has slightly lower lactose levels than cow whey, which may be better tolerated by individuals with lactose intolerance, though it still contains lactose.
  • Cow whey has a higher lactose content, which can cause digestive issues for those who are lactose intolerant.

3. Allergenic Profile:

  • Goat whey tends to be less allergenic because goat milk proteins are structurally different from cow milk proteins, which are common allergens. People who are allergic to cow's milk generally do better with goat's milk.
  • Cow whey contains beta-lactoglobulin, a common allergen that can cause allergic reactions, especially in young children or those with dairy allergies.

4. Nutrient Composition:

  • Goat whey is higher in Vitamin A and in minerals like calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and it also contains a higher proportion of medium-chain fatty acids, which are easier to metabolize and may provide quicker energy. Goat whey also contains a prebiotic fiber called  oligosaccharides that support a healthy gut.
  • Cow whey is more acidic and uses minerals like magnesium and calcium to alkalinize it and balance the PH of the blood.

5. Taste:

  • Goat whey can have a more distinct, earthy taste that some people find stronger or slightly sour. Elite Fuel Goat Whey is sweetened with stevia and natural vanilla bean flavor, making it a winner in the taste category even with kids.
  • Cow whey is a mild and familiar flavor for most people which may require less sweetener or even unflavored formulas.
